Korcula
Yacht charter guests will be astound that the town of Korcula looks just as it did in the Middle Ages, complete with a thick stone wall, just as it was in medieval times. Narrow streets fill the center of town and lookout towers spike from the walls, creating fabulous locations for viewing the beauty of land and sea.
Marco Polo’s birth home is a non-descript building in town. It is protected by the Korcula Town Hall and will soon be converted into a Marco Polo Museum, which will allow visitors a more expansive learning experience in regards to the history of the adventurer and the island he called home.
The Polo family has a long, storied past in Korcula. They were born here. They worked, loved, and lived here. Generations of Polos called this beautiful island home. Marco’s father, Nikola, and his Uncle Mate began their trading outpost in Korcula before they, along with young Marco, traveled on the Silk Road trade route from Middle East to China.
After their journey that lasted twenty-four years, Marco returned to find Venice at war with Genoa. In the battle of Korcula, he was taken prisoner by the Genoese. His cellmate, Rustichello da Pisa, would listen intently as Marco Polo told tales of his adventures and described a land unlike any he had heard of before – the Far East.
Da Pisa was enthralled with the stories and wrote down everything in a book that became Il Milione (Million) or The Travels of Marco Polo. The travelogue became extremely popular in Europe, providing people a window view into the exotic world of China and Central Asia. The book was translated and embellished upon so many times that the content of the original is not certain.
Marco Polo’s travels inspired many other young adventurers, including Christopher Columbus. Today’s adventurers can still be inspired by him. Travel back to medieval times with luxury yacht charters to Korcula, the birthplace of Marco Polo, and experience the past – today.
