Southern Dalmatia is the smallest and the most southern part of Croatia. This region does not have a natural backdrop like the rest of Dalmatia.
The most attractive towns and islands in Central Dalmatia are:
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is probably the most well known place in Croatia, and not without reason. Dubrovnik is a city full of history and cultural heritage and lies under the protection of UNESCO. Its beautiful natural surroundings, preserved cultural and historical architecture have made Dubrovnik one of the most visited cities on the Adriatic Sea. More information on Dubrovnik.
Korčula
Korcula is considered one of the most well preserved medieval towns in the world as well as the birthplace of Marco Polo (at least the Croatians claim Marco Polo was born there. The town of Korcula is worth visiting for its medieval walled old town and charming narrow stone streets . Korcula is also famous for its sandy beaches (most beaches in Croatia are stone or pebble). More information on Korcula.
Pelješac
Peljesac is a long and narrow peninsula, particularly diverse because of its shape; some of the finest Croatian wines come from Pelješac.
Island Mljet
Mljet is Croatia’s greenest island and half of the island is a national park. There are a few charming small easide villages on the islands but no large towns – and only one major road. Mljet is well known for its two seawater lakes - Veliko and Malo Jezero that are located at the north end of the island. On a small island in the middle of Veliko Jezero lake, there is old Benedictine monastery.
The Lonely Planet guidebook calls Mljet "the most seductive island in the Adriatic".
Island Lastovo
The island is famous for its olive and wine orchards. Lastovo island is surrounded by 46 smaller islands and cliffs with untouched nature and numerous bays - The Lastovo archipelago was declared a Natural Park in 2006. The most popular island in the archipelago is Saplun which is well known for its sandy beaches.
